What we’re looking for:
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Deputy Head Greenkeeper to continue to take Silkstone Golf Club to the next level by exceeding the expectations of our Members and Visitors.
The successful candidate will be an integral part of the team and be involved in the day to day presentation of the golf course and work along side other greenkeepers including the 2nd deputy, under the Head Greenkeeper.
The individual will effectively carry out day-to-day duties whilst looking to improve and achieve high standards. We are looking for a passionate, proud and committed candidate to help drive our golf course forward.
About the role…
Key responsibilities:
- Conduct regular inspections of grounds to ensure safety standards are met.
- Collaborate with other team members to complete tasks efficiently and effectively.
- Course Maintenance: Leading all aspects of turf management, including mowing, fertilisation, irrigation, aeration, weed control, disease prevention, growth regulation, bunker and greens maintenance, drainage management, and tree/hedge care.
- Presentation & Upkeep: Maintaining all practice areas, including the driving range, chipping area and 2 putting greens, ensuring all areas are consistently presented to a high standard.
- Maintain a visible and approachable presence on the course, fostering positive relationships with Members and Guests
- Devise and apply sustainable pest, weed, and disease control strategies that balance environmental stewardship with course performance
- Ensure strict adherence to health and safety legislation and environmental policies, maintain all associated records and training requirements
- Attend cross functional meetings as well as participate in regular reviews to continually improve course standards and team effectiveness
- Ensure the security and safeguarding of all course facilities, machinery, and materials in accordance with club procedures
- Help organise and participate in project work such as tree planning and pruning, greens, tee and bunker renovation, seeding, path works and drainage.
- Assist in the ordering and purchasing of materials and to help maintain appropriate records and accounts.
- Assist the Head Greenkeeper in planning and supervising daily work programmes and improvement projects.
- Lead by example and deputise in the absence of the Head Greenkeeper.
- Assist the Head Greenkeeper in ensuring that all green staff are fully inducted, trained and developed to gain the ability to deliver high standards on the golf course.
Skills, experience and qualities you’ll need
- At least 3 years’ experience as a Senior Greenkeeper or Deputy Course Manager.
- NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in Sports Turf Management as a minimum qualification.
- PA1, PA2 and PA6 spraying certificates.
- Chainsaw certification (preferred but not essential).
- A willingness to work outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Excellent leadership and communication skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a team effectively.
- Knowledge of modern industry practices, including sustainable and environmentally friendly course management, including being and keeping up with legislation covering the use of pesticides and fertilisers
- A drive to stay current with continual professional development
- In-depth knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, machinery, and turf management
- Great planning and time management skills, able to prioritise seasonal tasks effectively
- A hands-on attitude and willingness to lead by example
- Leadership and people management skills, with experience supervising or mentoring others
- Flexibility and adaptability, especially around weather conditions and event demands
- Pride in presentation and attention to detail across the course and surrounding areas
- A genuine passion for the game of golf and an appreciation for what today’s golfers expect
- Passionate about course presentation with a track record of delivering high-quality playing surfaces and attention to detail
- Dynamic, driven, and forward-thinking, with the confidence to challenge norms and raise expectations
- Skilled in financial oversight, including budgeting, forecasting, and cost control
- Committed to ongoing professional development and staying up to date with best practices in turf and leadership
- Full and valid UK driving licence

The position is full time, working 40 hours per week and you will be expected to work weekends on a rotation basis
